Tellart and Google Creative Lab created the Binoculars to celebrate the 40th birthday of the Sydney Opera House—and its inscription to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Tellart reinvented a timeless icon of street furniture, combining it with Google's Street View technology to create surprising moments of teleportation.
Expecting a universally familiar tourist experience, visitors peering into the binoculars were instead transported from where they stood to sister World Heritage sites all over the world.
“It's the Sydney Opera House's 40th anniversary and we wanted to do something that felt like a gift, a surprise. You’ll have this special moment where you walk to these iconic design objects–these binoculars–underneath one of the world's most iconic buildings, and you can look through and be transported to anywhere in the world.”
Tea Uglow, Google Creative Lab
“It used familiar interaction and mechanisms to put the Opera House in the context of other great places by showing rather than telling.”
